Ms. Estevez's Preschool AUT

About Me

My name is Kathleen Estevez, but my students call me Ms. Kathleen. I currently teach a preschool AUT self-contained class at Shaler Academy, where I have been proud to work for the past nine years.

Education & Credentials

I attended John Jay College, where I graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice and a minor in Law. I also earned my Master's degree in Special Education from New Jersey City University. I hold teaching certifications in Preschool through 3rd grade, as well as in Special Education.

Teaching style

My teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that every child can learn and thrive when given the right support, environment and encouragement. I focus on building strong relationships, creating a structures yet flexile classroom, and using play-based, sensory-rich and individualized instruction to meet each child's developmental needs. I believe in meeting students where they are and celebrating every step of progress. I also prioritize close collaboration with families, therapists, and other service provider to ensure a well rounded approach to each child's growth.

What I enjoy the most about teaching preschool special education is the joy and growth that happens in those early years. I love seeing the excitement on a child's face when they communicate something new, master a skill or make a connection with a peer. It's incredibly rewarding to support families during this foundational stage and to be a part of each child's unique learning journey.

A Few Fun Facts

I grew up in Florida and attended Bayside High School before moving to the Northeast to study at Joh Jay College, where I was a member of the women's volleyball team. During my time there, I served as a team captain and was named MVP- experiences that deepened my love for the sport. I've continues that passion here at Ridgefield, where I've proudly coached the Lady Royals Varsity Volleyball Team for over 10 years. Outside of the classroom and coaching, I enjoy staying active with hot yoga, Pilates, and pickleball. I also love reading, cooking, and traveling whenever I get the chance.
