Mr. Peter Mastrangelo

As I begin my 2nd full year as Assistant Principal of Bergen Boulevard School and Shaler Academy, I look forward to working with the dedicated staff to provide the best possible educational program for our students. The 2017-2018 school year promises to be an exciting one for our students and staff as we continue to provide a safe, intellectual learning environment that will inspire students to become creative problem solvers and critical thinkers.

Within each classroom, students have immediate access to SMART Boards, Chromebooks, iPads, and document cameras.  Our teachers use this technology as a tool to acquire critical thinking skills, as well as forming more universal connections with others to reach beyond our classrooms to enhance learning.

Mondo Bookshop, Good Habits Great Readers, Being a Writer and the Orton Gillingham Curriculum is used in our language arts literacy instruction. Using the Envisions 2.0 and Touch Math curriculum, instruction focuses on the ability of our students to transfer their learning to solve real-life scenarios.

We also recognize the importance of content area skills in social studies and science. We will be implementing the Knowing Science curriculum in September 2017.  This curriculum is aligned to the NJ Student Learning Standards and provides students with the opportunity to develop higher-level cognitive skills of analysis, synthesis, and evaluation as well as practice skills through differentiated guided inquiry.

Using resources such as Rethink, Aimsweb, IXL, Raz-Kids, and Time for Kids, our teachers are able to supplement and individualize their instruction to meet the needs of all of our students.

Formative and summative assessments are used to help drive the instruction. Teachers use formative assessments to guide student-learning daily, while summative assessments such as benchmarks and end of unit tests are used to help evaluate learning and instructional programs.

On behalf of the Bergen Boulevard and Shaler Academy faculty and staff, I invite you to join us in making this the very best experience for our children.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.
