Mr. Steven Kahn
I have been employed by The Ridgefield Board of Education for 21 years. I began as a teacher of Behavior Disabled students in 1993, in Bergen Blvd School and moved to the same position at Ridgefield Memorial High School in 1997. In 2001, I was offered the position of Consociate, which entailed supervising the Special Education program at the high school. In the past 13 years I have supervised the creation and enhancement of several special education programs as well as the training of Special Education staff. We have developed departmental programs to provide appropriate instruction that meets the individual needs of all students. There are several levels of each subject area that allows students to learn in classes with students of similar abilities. This helps us to assess student's development and move them to more challenging classes when ready. It also allows us to determine readiness for mainstream classes. Finally, it gives students a normalized educational experience in a least restrictive setting. We also created programs for our students aged 18-21. The STRIVE program focuses on teaching students to live independent lifestyles. Students go to work internships with job coaches and participate in community based instruction programs that teaches them to develop skills in natural settings. The classroom work emphasizes instruction in occupational guidance and preparation, daily living skills, functional academics, and social skills. We developed and implemented the program years before it became important to districts throughout the state. Many of the similar programs in existence in North Jersey now, used our model and resources, and toured our facilities. We have continued to be on the cutting edge in this field and received awards from the state, in 2014, for our Community Based Instruction programs and staff excellence. We continue to receive invitations to participate in important Department of Education programs.
My work with high school students in Ridgefield also includes coaching girls and boys basketball, which I have done for over 25 years. I have always believed that sports can provide important learning experiences and character development. I have had the pleasure of many former students and players, aged twenty to forty-three, return and tell me that I made a positive impact in their lives. That is the greatest honor of my professional life.
