Dear Families:

We welcome our new and returning students to School Year 2019-20. The Shaler and Bergen faculty and staff are excited to develop relationships and work together with you this school year.

Beginning this school year, Shaler and Bergen students will benefit from additional physical education and fitness in addition to the mandated daily 20 minutes of recess. We believe that children not only learn through an instructional framework, but through structured play as well.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention sites the benefits of recess to include:

  • Increasing children’s level of physical activity.

  • Improving children’s memory, attention, and concentration.

  • Helping children stay on-task in the classroom.

  • Reducing disruptive behavior in the classroom.

  • Improving children’s social and emotional development (e.g., learning how to share and negotiate).

Read more about the importance of recess at https://www.cdc.gov/healthyschools/physicalactivity/recess.htm.

Our experienced team of teachers effectively implement technology instruction using Chromebooks, MacBooks, iPads and other equipment; expose students to cultural diversity through literature and writing using the Mondo Bookshop and Being a Writer programs; and help students develop critical thinking and inquiry-based problem solving using Envisions Math. Classroom teachers also collect data to monitor progress and individualize instruction to meet students’ needs.

We are dedicated to facilitating an environment that expands students’ natural curiosity and excitement for learning. We welcome you to partner with us to make a difference in students’ lives. We are looking forward to meeting and working with all of you in the coming school year.

Sincerely,

Dr. DePass
