National Junior Honor Society
Slocum Skewes School
Membership in the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) at Slocum Skewes School is open to any 7th-grade or 8th-grade student who meets all the following membership requirements at the end of the third marking period in 2024:
- Completes at least three marking periods of the 7th-grade or 8th-grade year at Slocum Skewes School.
- Has a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.5 in academic (social studies, language arts, math, and science) subjects, with no grade below a B- in any subject including specials, electives, world language, study skills, and gym/health for ALL marking periods of the 2023-2024 school year.
- Upon meeting the grade level, enrollment, and GPA standards, candidates will then be considered for membership based on their service, leadership, citizenship, and character.
- Accrues no detentions related to behavior in violation of the school code of conduct (the code of conduct can be found in the student handbook on the district website).
- Accrues no more than 6 unexcused tardies to school.
- Performs a total of 10 hours of documented community service from a recognized nonprofit, community, or education organization from 9/6/2023 - 4/17/2024. A minimum of five hours must be completed outside of the school. The remaining five hours can be completed either outside of school or in the Ridgefield School District as part of a school function or school-approved project.
An active member of the National Junior Honor Society who transfers to Slocum Skewes School will be automatically accepted for membership in this chapter. The faculty council shall grant to the transferring member one semester to attain the membership requirements and, thereafter, this member must maintain those requirements for this chapter to retain his/her membership.
The selection of members to this chapter shall be by a majority vote of the faculty council which consists of five faculty members appointed by the principal. The chapter adviser shall be the sixth, nonvoting, member of the faculty council. The faculty council shall review the candidate information forms, faculty input, and other relevant information to determine those who fully meet the criteria for membership.
During the week of April 17, 2024, academically eligible students will be invited to apply for admission to the NJHS by email. An email will also be sent to parents of eligible students. Applications must be completed and returned to Ms. Courtney Goch by May 3, 2024.
When a student becomes a member of the NJHS, their academic performance, service, and conduct are closely monitored. If a student’s GPA drops below 3.5, receives a grade lower than B- in any subject, or fails to complete mandatory service or projects, he or she will be placed on probation. A second infraction of the set criteria will result in dismissal from the NJHS. Furthermore, failure to participate in required service projects or complete the mandatory 10 hours of community service during the school year will also lead to dismissal.
