A survey of the social, political, economic, cultural, and intellectual history of the United States from the Civil War/Reconstruction era to the present. United States History II examines industrialization, immigration, world wars, the Great Depression, Cold War and post-Cold War eras. Themes that may be addressed in United States History II include: American culture, religion, civil and human rights, technological change, economic change, immigration and migration, urbanization and suburbanization, the expansion of the federal government, and the study of U.S. foreign policy.
Here are the topics we will be covering this year:
1. Foundations of American Political and Social Thought
2. Industrialization and the U.S. Role as a World Power
3. The United States Between the World Wars
4. World War II and Foreign Affairs
5. Post World War II Domestic Issues
You must be in the classroom by the time the bell rings otherwise you will be marked tardy. A tardy results in a detention to be served either the next day or the following day only.
All students must come to class prepared. This means student has textbook, paper, writing utensil and any other materials required for that day.
All students must have their ID badges on their person and be dressed appropriately.
Talking out of turn will not be tolerated. When the teacher is lecturing, there are to be no side conversations. When students are giving presentations or have the floor to talk, other students should be quiet and respectful.
Inappropriate behavior will be handled on an individual basis or as specified by Ridgefield Board of Education School policy.
Productive Citizens: Students will be given the tools necessary to make a valuable impact at their school and in their communities.
Resourceful Producer: Students will be provided with the skills required in order to be significant contributors to their school, community and society.
Independent Lifelong Learner: Students will be given the skills necessary to continue learning well into adulthood.
Decision Maker: Students will be provided with the skills to make judgments based on fact and reason rather than sentiment.
Effective Communicator: Students will be given the skills needed in order to express their thoughts and opinions in a clear and effective manner.
Class Expectations/ Grading policies:
Homework, Projects & Tests
Homework is given consistently and collected on a regular basis. It is passed back before any major exams so that students may use them as a study guide. All work must be turned in during the class period if student is present in class (not during lunch, between classes, or after school). Exams are usually short answer and must be completed in the time period given (unless there are special circumstances worked out beforehand). Projects are used as summative assessments as well. Projects are always given several weeks to complete and many include class time to work on researching, typing etc.
Late Work & AbsencesStudents who have an excused absence are expected to turn in their assignments the day they return to school. When absent, students are responsible for making up their missing assignments or tests. Tests and quizzes that were missed must be made up within 1 week of the absence during the time that is chosen by the teacher. Projects will not be accepted late unless there was an excused all day absence. For instance, if student was absent for my period but attended their other classes that day I would expect their project to be turned in that day, not the next. Any questions about absent work need to be asked after class, at lunch, or after school. Late work will only be accepted on a case-by-case basis. Simply forgetting your work in the locker, car etc. is not a valid excuse.
Notebooks & Materials
Students are required to have a notebook for this class. Notebooks will be collected every quarter. In order to get full credit, it must be organized, not include other work from different subjects and must have the topics that were chosen to be checked. Those topics will not be told to students ahead of time.
I use a variety of activities for instruction and assessment. Students will learn how to research, write and give oral presentations. Students will have the opportunity to work as individuals, in pairs, and in small groups throughout the year. Students will be given individual grades even when working in groups based on their participation.AssessmentStudents will be graded on tests/quizzes (daily), homework, and participation. Grades will be calculated by an ongoing accumulation of points throughout the marking period. Grades are updated on Genesis on a regular basis.
