This year is my 12th year in the Ridgefield School District. Prior to becoming the Supervisor of Instruction, I have been a teacher in the Slocum Skewes Learning Center for the past 7 years. I also served as an in-class support teacher in 7th and 8th grade at Slocum Skewes. Before working in Ridgefield, I taught in both Virginia and Delaware.
During my time in Ridgefield, I was named the 2018/19 Slocum Skewes Teacher of the Year and have received numerous local and national grants that have helped strengthen our school and district. I lead our partnership with the New York Jets and the implementation of their anti-bullying program that recognizes students that are Upstanders. I was also awarded a 2019 National Promising Practice Award for a program that I instituted in my classroom.
Back in 2007, I was selected by Ms. Erin Gruwell as 1 of 150 teachers to take part in the Freedom Writers Teachers Institute in Long Beach, California. The Freedom Writers Institute is a training program run by Ms. Gruwell based on her experiences in the classroom in Long Beach. Her innovative classroom techniques were documented in the movie, The Freedom Writers which starred Hilary Swank and Patrick Dempsey.
From my involvement with the Freedom Writers, I had the opportunity to become a published author. In the book Teaching Hope, one of my stories about my teaching experience was chosen to be included in its publication.
