Functional Academics is a component of the STRIVE Program. The focus of the class is two fold. Students practice the academic skills that they need in the other areas of the program; Daily Living and Occupational Guidance and Preparation. Students also work towards meeting the goals in their IEPs in small groups or individually on their specific areas of academic weakness. The newspaper is used in class as a tool for teaching real life math and English skills. Other curriculum materials include Attainment's Explore Math and Explore Budgeting series.
Students are expected to come prepared for class with their individual practice work. They are often provided with a variety of academic choices that will allow them to work as independently and successfully as possible.
