I have been married to my husband, John, for 31 years. I am the proud mother of three boys; ages 30, 28, and 24. I am beginning my 21st year working with and teaching students with special needs in the Ridgefield school district. Prior to teaching, I worked as a professional actress (AEA) and worked in the private sector for an investment banking firm. My first love is teaching! (but I also love to read, cook, and take long walks with my Nova Scotia retriever; Jack)
I believe that each child has the capacity and the desire to learn. My job is to be the detective who probes and challenges, until I find the pathway to open each student's mind and heart. Once a mind and heart is opened, his or her potential has no limit! I believe that children must be challenged beyond their comfort zone. That is why I always try to start instruction at the place where they are just outside of that zone, until they become comfortable. This builds self-esteem and confidence. Differentiation and individualized instruction is a hallmark of special education. Each child needs an individual approach to style, materials, and work habits. My goal is to help each individual student reach their highest potential. School should also be a fun and joyful place where students look forward to coming to learn and play. Social skills instruction is embedded into each day with opportunities to play and socialize in a structured environment.
