Social Studies

 

The Social Studies program is based upon a philosophy, which fosters an understanding, appreciation, and commitment to the democratic processes of life and of government.  The curriculum is dedicated to encourage the exploration and the analysis of an every developing array of the skills necessary to live a pragmatic and fulfilling life.  These life skills are nurtured and enriched as the student progresses through the curriculum.  The cooperation, civic responsibility, community awareness, attentive listening, and the development of the appreciation of cultural heritage through aesthetic awareness. 

The Social Studies Department at Ridgefield Memorial consists of six teachers who bring a rich mixture of experiences in education and life skills.  The department is most proud of the: cohesiveness, mutual respect, and open communication, which exists among its members.  All the department members are skilled professionals who bring a wealth of knowledge and training to historical content and pedagogy.  Mr. Manto, the Chair of the Department, has over thirty-seven years of experience and Mr. Kraushar has over thirty-three years experience.  Three teachers, Mr. Manto, Mr. Kraushar, and Ms. Benimeli hold Masters Degrees plus over thirty hours of postgraduate credits.  Mr. Fabiano is multi-certificated.  He is certified in: history, anthropology, and psychology.

Members of the department have been honored through a multitude of awards and professional recognitions.  These include: Time-Warner Star Teacher, United States Decathlon Coach of the Year, Douglass College Outstanding Teacher Award, Chicago University Teacher Award, New Jersey Distinguished Teacher of the Humanities Recipient, Governors’ Recognition Award, and a Sons of Italy Educator of the Year. 

The members of the Social Studies Department also participates in extra-curricular activities which enrich both the academic and athletic aspect of our campus.  Mr. Burke, Mr. Fabiano, and Mr. Cooper coach: football, tennis, wrestling, golf, softball, and volleyball.  Mr. Cooper is the advisor of the Heroes and Cool Kids Organization.  Mr. Kraushar is the coach of a stellar Academic Decathlon, and Mr. Manto is the advisor of the PALS, the 9-11 Commemoration Committee, and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Multicultural Committee.  Ms. Benimeli is the Advisor of the Class of 2010.
